Solar spectacle: Check out the sun in ultra-HD

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures stunning images of the solar surface. 

For stunning, jaw-dropping images of the sun, it's hard to top NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which allows us to watch fantastic scenes of the solar surface that can't be seen by the naked eye.
Presented in ultra-high definition, this video presents the dance of the ultra-hot material on our life-giving star in extraordinary detail, offering an intimate view of the grand forces of the solar system, NASA said.
What we're seeing are eruptions of giant clouds of solar material, called coronal mass ejections, and explosions of X-rays called solar flares. Basically, what the SDO is doing is making invisible ultraviolet light visible to our eyes.
Launched five years ago, the SDO is a satellite that's in orbit around the Earth, with sensors pointed at the sun to take a variety of measurements of the sun and solar activity.
One of the mission's goals is to see how the sun's magnetic field is generated and structured, and how it impacts life on Earth and our telecommunications systems.
